Yarn Cake: 2 Ply Polywester Yarn

Named after the NorWester mountain range that is a feature of the area, this 100% local yarn has been grown and milled on our farm. It is 100% Polypay sheep's wool (Polypay is similar to Merino).

Weight: ~5 oz.

Wraps per inch (wpi): ~9; chunky

Yardage: ~210 yds.

Needles: 5.5 to 9 mm

Colour: Naturally off-white (undyed)

Material: 100% Polypay

Source: 100% Borderlands Farm

Processing: All of our yarn begins as raw fleece, which is washed, carded, and spun by us right here in Thunder Bay in our on-site wool mill. In addition to raising the sheep ourselves, we are creating each skein from start to finish out of our own fibre. We are a woolen mill, which means our fibres are carded into random arrangement (as opposed to combined into alignment). The resulting yarn has a loftier feel as a result. We do not use chemical scouring and therefore do not create a "superwash" product. Our fibres are not bleached and we only use natural soaps.

Tip: Always swatch! Yarn from small mills like ours is more variable than commercial yarn.

Care: All items made with untreated (non-superwash) wool should be hand washed in cold water and laid flat to dry. Spot cleaning will help prolong the life of your knitwear.

  • DISCLAIMER

We do our best to represent colours accurately, however not all screens are calibrated the same and colour may appear differently in person.

Small scale on-farm processing like ours means that there will be a few joins/knots, a small amount of vegetable matter (hay or straw bits) and more noticeable variation in the yarn. The weight of wool varies based on the humidity in the air, so all weights are approximations.
